Why Local Storage?
Here's the honest reason FreeVTT uses local storage: it's cheaper to let you store your stuff on your own devices instead of me hosting a server for everyone. And that's actually a good thing because it means I don't have to charge you anything. Doing it this way makes the whole thing almost free to run, so I can keep it free for you.
But there's a bonus: your data never leaves your device. No cloud. No server. No account. Your campaigns, characters, maps, and homebrew content all live on your machine. Nobody else can see it, access it, or sell it. That's not a feature we added as an afterthought. It's fundamental to how FreeVTT works.
No Account Required
You know what I hate? Creating accounts for things. Email, password, confirm password, verify email, accept terms, set up 2FA... just to roll some dice on a virtual table.
FreeVTT doesn't ask for any of that. Open the site, create a campaign, start playing. There's no sign-up form. No email field. No "Sign in with Google." Your browser is your account, and your device is your server.
What About Backups?
Good question. Since your data is local, if you clear your browser data or switch devices, you'd lose your campaigns. That's where the export feature comes in.
FreeVTT lets you export your entire campaign into a single file. Maps, characters, custom content, everything. Save it to your desktop, your cloud drive, wherever. If you ever need to restore it, just import the file and you're back in business.
I'd recommend exporting after each session, just to be safe. It takes two seconds and gives you peace of mind.
Works Offline Too
Since everything is stored locally, you can prep your campaigns without an internet connection. Set up your maps, place tokens, write handouts, build characters, all without WiFi. You only need internet when you want to host a multiplayer session so your players can connect.
This is great for DMs who prep at weird hours or in places without great WiFi. Your favorite coffee shop doesn't have internet? Doesn't matter. Prep your dungeon on the bus? Go for it. FreeVTT doesn't need a connection for solo work.
