IT'S FREE!!
Yeah, you read that right. Hosting your game on FreeVTT costs you absolutely nothing. I figured out how to make the hosting stupid cheap on my end, so why not just share it with everyone? No subscriptions, no tiers, no "premium hosting" upsell. Just free.
Most VTTs either charge you for hosting or make you set up your own server, which is a pain if you don't know how networking works. With FreeVTT, you just click "Host Game" and share the code with your players. They join from their browser. Done.
How It Works
Here's the whole process:
- Open your campaign in FreeVTT
- Click the multiplayer button to start hosting
- Share the game code with your players
- Players go to FreeVTT and click "Join Game"
- They enter the code and they're in
No port forwarding. No IP addresses. No server configuration. No technical knowledge required. If your players can open a web browser, they can join your game.
Why It's Lightweight
FreeVTT keeps things lean. The connection depends on the host's internet, but since we're not streaming video or running heavy simulations, it doesn't take much bandwidth. Your players see the map, move their tokens, and roll dice. That's all pretty lightweight data.
I've had groups of 5-6 players connected without any issues. It works on home WiFi, it works on mobile data, it works at the coffee shop. If you can load a website, you can host or join a FreeVTT game.
Play from Any Device
One of the reasons I built FreeVTT in the first place was for my friends to play on phones and tablets. Most VTTs are desktop-first and the mobile experience is an afterthought. FreeVTT was designed with mobile in mind from day one.
So when your players join your hosted game, they can do it from a laptop, a tablet, or their phone. No app download required. It's all browser-based.
