Why Mobile Matters for TTRPGs
A lot of VTTs are designed for one person sitting at a desktop PC — the GM. Players are kind of an afterthought, joining from whatever device they have and hoping the interface works. That's not good enough when half your group is on their phone.
FreeVTT was built with mobile in mind from the start, because the original goal was to let friends play around a table with the DM on a laptop and everyone else on their phones. Touch controls, responsive layouts, and a UI sized for smaller screens aren't patches — they're part of how the whole thing works.
Playing Around the Table
This is the use case FreeVTT was originally designed for: everyone in the same room, but each player has their own device. The DM opens the campaign on their laptop or tablet, sets up the map, and shares a join code. Players open FreeVTT on their phones, enter the code, and they're in the game.
Each player sees the same map as the DM. They can tap to move their token, open their character sheet, roll dice, and track their own HP and conditions — all from their phone, in real time.
No passing a laptop around. No one squinting at a tiny window on someone else's screen. Everyone plays on their own device, and the map stays visible for everyone at the same time.
What Players Can Do on Mobile
Move Their Token
Tap and drag to move across the map. Touch controls are responsive and feel natural on phones and tablets.
Open Their Character Sheet
Tap their token to open the character panel. HP, AC, conditions, spells, attacks, skills — all accessible from the sheet.
Roll Dice
Tap any rollable stat to roll. Attack rolls, skill checks, saving throws — one tap and the result shows up in the shared dice log for everyone to see.
Track HP and Conditions
Players can update their own HP as damage is dealt. Conditions like Prone, Poisoned, and Stunned are tracked on their token so everyone can see.
See the Map in Real Time
When the DM moves the view, changes the map, or drops a new token, players see it immediately. No refresh needed.
Pinch to Zoom
Standard pinch-to-zoom works on the map canvas. Players can zoom in on combat to see what's happening without asking the DM to move the camera.
No App Install Required
FreeVTT runs in the browser. Players don't need to download anything from an app store, create an account, or remember a password. They just open a link on their phone and they're in.
This matters more than it sounds. Getting five people to install the same app, log in, and figure out how to join a game adds friction right at the start of your session. With FreeVTT, you share a code and everyone's at the table in under a minute.
Works on iPhone, Android, iPad, Android tablets — anything with a modern mobile browser. Chrome and Safari both work well.
Remote Play Works Too
Around-the-table play is what FreeVTT was built for, but it works just as well for remote games. Players on different devices in different locations all connect to the same campaign. The DM runs the game from their laptop, and players join from whatever they have — phone, tablet, or computer.
The peer-to-peer connection means the game stays fast even without a dedicated server. As long as the DM's connection is solid, the experience is smooth for everyone else.
DMs Can Use a Tablet Too
The DM interface works on tablets. You can run a full session from an iPad or Android tablet — move tokens, manage initiative, control lighting, open handouts, and run the whole show without a laptop. It's not as comfortable as a big monitor for complex map editing, but for running a session in progress it works great.
A solid setup for around-the-table play: DM on a tablet propped up on a stand in the center of the table, players on their own phones. Everyone has their own view, the map is always visible, and the game runs itself without anyone having to pass a device around.
